Women Hunting

Women Hunting in Alaska for any species is cool, but women hunting Brown Bears is really cool. Kayla has hunted a number of species in Alaska. We were stoked when she harvested her first Brown Bear with Vast Alaska. Obviously she knows a thing or two about hunting in general. When I loaded Kayla and Seans´ gear into the Super Cubs it was apparent that they knew how to pack and what they would need. There was nothing frivolous about their equipment, it was not excessive. It was what a professional guide would bring. The stage was set, a camp was put in place days earlier by a very active stream with copious spawning salmon. Bears were cycling in and out of the creek 24 hours a day. Although it sounds like shooting fish out of a barrel, it is a bit more complicated when dangerous game is involved.

A Brown Bear is an animal to take seriously, especially when you are trying to kill one. One clean and ethical shot is all it takes. To get into that position is another story. A Brown Bears acute sense of smell is its primary sense, and its eyesight is its secondary sense. Imagine you are trying to close the distance to get into a position to make a clean shot on an unaware bear.  The terrain won’t allow you to stay down wind. This is a simple scenario but it’s a harsh reality. Timing is everything to have a well placed shot when your target is moving. Kayla did everything right, a clean and ethical kill, and a grand adventure.
